Making government accountable to people, not corporations

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Washington only really works for big banks, corporations and their lobbyists, who have a direct line to our elected leaders. But Washington doesn’t work for most people – and the only way to change that is to get money out of politics.

I believe in a government that is accountable to everyday Americans — not just CEOs and billionaires. That’s why I support the proposed Government by the People Act, which would create a system where public matching of small-dollar donations can offset the negative influence of corporate money in our elections.

The bill would allow federal candidates to voluntarily opt to only accept donations of $150 or less — and have those donations matched six-to-one. With this plan, a high school teacher who donates $100 would have the same voice as a lobbyist who contributes $700. This bill would get us one step closer to leveling the playing field and ensure that we truly are a government of, for, and by the people.

To further accomplish this goal, I also support a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Citizens United decision.

Re: Recent Polling in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District

Date: July 28, 2014

A recent survey among likely August 2014 Democratic primary voters in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District shows that former State Representative Ruben Gallego holds a clear, 8- point lead over Mary Rose Wilcox. The poll finds that Gallego has strengthened his position since the spring and that Wilcox’s attacks on Gallego have backfired, damaging her own favorability ratings without affecting Gallego’s. As the campaign heads into its final month it is clear that given the resources, Gallego is in a strong position to win this race.

Gallego’s continued lead is fueled by two main factors:

First, despite Wilcox’s attacks, Gallego is more popular than he was at the beginning of the campaign – and he has grown stronger. In May, 43% of voters viewed Gallego favorably and 6% viewed him unfavorably for a net favorable rating of +37. Today Gallego is viewed favorably by 51% of voters and unfavorably by just 11%, for a net favorable rating of +39. In other words, Gallego’s positive, issue-focused campaign has improved his popularity, even as the Wilcox campaign made false attacks on Gallego over issues such as his name.

Second, Wilcox’s attacks on Gallego have backfired and she is more unpopular than she was before the attacks began. During this same period, Wilcox’s popularity has eroded. In May, 48% of likely voter viewed Wilcox favorably and 27% viewed her unfavorably for a net favorable rating of +22. Today, just 40% view her favorably and 30% view her unfavorably, for a net favorable rating of only +11, which is 11 points lower than before her attacks on Gallego began.

The implications are clear: Gallego is leading and is well positioned to become Arizona’s next Member of Congress. As this campaign enters its final stages, Gallego holds a significant lead over Wilcox and is viewed much more favorably than her.

i Methods: Lake Research Partners designed and administered this survey and it was conducted by telephone using professional interviewers July 20-22, 2014. Both landlines and cell phones were called. The survey reached a total of 400 likely August 2014 Democratic Primary voters in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. Telephone numbers for the sample were generated from a list of registered voters in Arizona. The data were weighted slightly by race, age, region, party registration, and gender. The margin of error is +/- 4.9% and larger for subgroups.

Gallego Raises more than $272,000 this Quarter and Nearly $435,000 for the Cycle – Has more than $300,000 cash on hand

PHOENIX, AZ — Ruben Gallego announced today that he raised more than $272,000 for the second quarter and has more than $300,000 cash on hand going into the final two months of the campaign.

In total, the campaign has raised nearly $435,000 from almost 1,500 donors.

“We have built a grassroots army that will not only help our campaign, but will boost turnout for Democrats statewide. We can win this election and help flip the state for Democrats — but first we needed the resources to do it”

“This report shows we can do that — and I’m incredibly thankful to everyone who has contributed to this campaign.”

Gallego, a former state Representative and Marine Corps combat veteran, is vying for the Congressional seat in Arizona’s seventh district.

The Gallego campaign has continued to demonstrate its strength and momentum with major endorsements from Planned Parenthood, Rep. Raúl Grijalva and former Rep. Harry Mitchell, unions such as the AFL-CIO, SEIU, UFCW, and the Teamsters, public safety associations such as the Arizona Highway Patrol Association and Professional Firefighters of Arizona, and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta.

Planned Parenthood Advocacy Groups Endorse Ruben Gallego in Arizona Congressional Race

Washington, DC — Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona (PPAA) announces the endorsement of Ruben Gallego for Congress.

“Ruben Gallego has a spotless voting record on women’s health care at the Arizona State Legislature,” states Bryan Howard, CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona. “His advocacy included support of emergency contraception for assault victims, tireless efforts against denial of public funding for Planned Parenthood and stalwart support for Medicaid expansion.  We look forward to working with him in Congress.”

“As one of the founders of Arizona Men for Choice, and an active member of Catholics for Choice, Ruben is a staunch abortion rights advocate and longtime supporter of Planned Parenthood,” says Jodi Liggett, director of public policy, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona. “In Arizona and across the nation, we continue to see politicians try to dictate when and how women access health care. We are confident that in Congress, Ruben will be a fierce advocate for choice, just as he has been in the Arizona Legislature.”

“Ruben is a visionary leader committed to increasing civic engagement in his community, especially among young people around issues that matter most, like health care,” says Howard. “In Congress, we are confident we will work to protect access to quality, affordable health care to ensure that all Americans, no matter where they live, or how much money they have, are able to get the care they need, when they need it.”

Earlier this year, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced the “Women are Watching” (WAW) campaign to educate voters about candidates’ positions on women’s health. Over the last several years, Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations have become a powerful and effective force by educating voters about where their candidates stand on women’s health issues. The majority of Americans and Arizona voters believe that a woman and her doctor, not politicians, should be making health care decisions.

  • Women’s health played the defining role in Terry McAuliffe’s gubernatorial victory last year in Virginia. He won women’s votes by a nine-point margin — matching Obama’s 2012 advantage with Virginia women, beating Obama’s 2008 advantage with Virginia women by two points, and flipping Republican Governor Bob McDonnell’s eight-point advantage with women that propelled him to victory in 2009. Notably, 20 percent of Virginia voters said abortion was the most important issue in determining their vote, and McAuliffe won 59 percent of those votes.
  • Polling from the 2012 election shows that access to safe and legal abortion, affordable birth control, and basic health care access are motivating voting issues for women, who view them as core economic issues for their families.  An overwhelming majority of women voters trust Planned Parenthood’s political and advocacy organizations when they speak out about issues affecting the health of women.
  • A 2012 post-election report from the Sunlight Foundation on big winners and losers found that the Action Fund had a 98 percent return on investment — having supported 12 winning candidates and opposed 12 losing candidates.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit membership organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational and electoral activity, including voter education, grassroots organizing, and legislative advocacy.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Arizona. It is a non-partisan membership organization whose purpose is to protect and promote sexual and reproductive health and rights in Arizona by educating the public and  public officials about these issues, as well as supporting pro-women’s health candidates for public office.
