Disabled veterans are currently allowed to have their federal student loan debt forgiven — but if that debt is in excess of $600, they could owe the IRS thousands of dollars.

Ruben Gallego just introduced a bill to fix this.

The VETS Act would exclude discharged federal loans from gross income when a veteran is totally and permanently disabled, or deceased. In certain circumstances, the VETS Act would also exclude parents who took out student loans on behalf of a deceased member of the Armed Forces.
