Superior Mayor Jayme Valenzuela Endorses Ruben Gallego for Congress

PHOENIX, AZ – Jayme Valenzuela, Mayor of Superior, Arizona, today endorsed Ruben Gallego for Congress.

“Superior needs a partner in Congress who will prioritize serving our state above anything else,” said Valenzuela. “Ruben Gallego has a record of honest and true public service we can trust.”

Mary Rose Wilcox was born and raised in Superior, a mining town 60 miles east of Phoenix. Valenzuela is a lifelong resident of Arizona and has served on the Superior Town Council for several years.

Gallego has also been endorsed by Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild – as well as Congressman Raul Grijalva and former Congressman Harry Mitchell.

Why is APS paying Mary Rose Wilcox?

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

As a Maricopa County Supervisor, Mary Rose Wilcox bought a parking lot from APS for more than a $100,000 below market value. Wilcox used that property to obtain hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans and on top of that she rented the parking lot back to APS for at least $5,000 a year.

But Wilcox never disclosed this business deal with APS while voting to give APS millions of dollars in county contracts, as the Phoenix New Times recently reported.

So what is Mary Rose Wilcox hiding?

Making government accountable to people, not corporations

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Washington only really works for big banks, corporations and their lobbyists, who have a direct line to our elected leaders. But Washington doesn’t work for most people – and the only way to change that is to get money out of politics.

I believe in a government that is accountable to everyday Americans — not just CEOs and billionaires. That’s why I support the proposed Government by the People Act, which would create a system where public matching of small-dollar donations can offset the negative influence of corporate money in our elections.

The bill would allow federal candidates to voluntarily opt to only accept donations of $150 or less — and have those donations matched six-to-one. With this plan, a high school teacher who donates $100 would have the same voice as a lobbyist who contributes $700. This bill would get us one step closer to leveling the playing field and ensure that we truly are a government of, for, and by the people.

To further accomplish this goal, I also support a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Citizens United decision.

Tell Mary Rose Wilcox to Pay Her Taxes

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Mary Rose Wilcox wants to play by a different set of rules than the rest of us. Wilcox repeatedly voted to raise taxes while failing to pay her own.

Wilcox owes the IRS between $50,000 and $100,000 in unpaid taxes and penalties. Wilcox has also missed at least 126 tax payment deadlines, and has had to pay more than $10,000 in penalties, interest, and lien payments.

Wilcox wants to decide how your tax dollars get spent, but refuses to pay her own taxes. Sign the petition and tell Mary Rose Wilcox that if she wants to represent you in Congress, she has to pay her taxes first.

Planned Parenthood Advocacy Groups Endorse Ruben Gallego in Arizona Congressional Race

Washington, DC — Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona (PPAA) announces the endorsement of Ruben Gallego for Congress.

“Ruben Gallego has a spotless voting record on women’s health care at the Arizona State Legislature,” states Bryan Howard, CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona. “His advocacy included support of emergency contraception for assault victims, tireless efforts against denial of public funding for Planned Parenthood and stalwart support for Medicaid expansion.  We look forward to working with him in Congress.”

“As one of the founders of Arizona Men for Choice, and an active member of Catholics for Choice, Ruben is a staunch abortion rights advocate and longtime supporter of Planned Parenthood,” says Jodi Liggett, director of public policy, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona. “In Arizona and across the nation, we continue to see politicians try to dictate when and how women access health care. We are confident that in Congress, Ruben will be a fierce advocate for choice, just as he has been in the Arizona Legislature.”

“Ruben is a visionary leader committed to increasing civic engagement in his community, especially among young people around issues that matter most, like health care,” says Howard. “In Congress, we are confident we will work to protect access to quality, affordable health care to ensure that all Americans, no matter where they live, or how much money they have, are able to get the care they need, when they need it.”

Earlier this year, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced the “Women are Watching” (WAW) campaign to educate voters about candidates’ positions on women’s health. Over the last several years, Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations have become a powerful and effective force by educating voters about where their candidates stand on women’s health issues. The majority of Americans and Arizona voters believe that a woman and her doctor, not politicians, should be making health care decisions.

  • Women’s health played the defining role in Terry McAuliffe’s gubernatorial victory last year in Virginia. He won women’s votes by a nine-point margin — matching Obama’s 2012 advantage with Virginia women, beating Obama’s 2008 advantage with Virginia women by two points, and flipping Republican Governor Bob McDonnell’s eight-point advantage with women that propelled him to victory in 2009. Notably, 20 percent of Virginia voters said abortion was the most important issue in determining their vote, and McAuliffe won 59 percent of those votes.
  • Polling from the 2012 election shows that access to safe and legal abortion, affordable birth control, and basic health care access are motivating voting issues for women, who view them as core economic issues for their families.  An overwhelming majority of women voters trust Planned Parenthood’s political and advocacy organizations when they speak out about issues affecting the health of women.
  • A 2012 post-election report from the Sunlight Foundation on big winners and losers found that the Action Fund had a 98 percent return on investment — having supported 12 winning candidates and opposed 12 losing candidates.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit membership organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational and electoral activity, including voter education, grassroots organizing, and legislative advocacy.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Arizona. It is a non-partisan membership organization whose purpose is to protect and promote sexual and reproductive health and rights in Arizona by educating the public and  public officials about these issues, as well as supporting pro-women’s health candidates for public office.
